In September 2020 it underwent a major expansion and renovation, growing to roughly 250 square meters. That expansion made Museo Xeolóxico the first museum in all of Galicia devoted exclusively to interpreting and promoting geological heritage.
What can visitors see inside?
The exhibition is spread across five rooms, arranged in chronological order from the oldest geological processes to the present day. Visitors learn how the rocks of Galicia were formed, including the distinctive Sierra de O Courel syncline, and the range of rock types found within the geopark. A separate section covers the Ice Age, the Pleistocene, and the traces left by glaciers across the Serra do Caurel.
The museum also displays remains of Quaternary mammals found in Galicia, among them cave bears, bison, mammoths, woolly rhinoceroses, and Ice Age deer. Another section covers the earliest human presence in the region: stone tools crafted by the first inhabitants of the Sil river valley, who settled there roughly 9,500 years ago. The final part of the exhibition traces the area's mining history, covering the extraction of slate, gold, iron, limestone, and antimonite.
