Mortemer Abbey

Mortemer Abbey (Abbaye de Mortemer) is a ruined Cistercian monastery tucked into the Forest of Lyons in Normandy, on the territory of the commune of Lisors, roughly 34 km southeast of Rouen in the Eure department. When was the abbey founded?

The community was established in 1134 at the initiative of Henry I Beauclerc, youngest son of William the Conqueror and king of England. Abbot Alexander settled here with his monks, and Henry funded the first buildings. Three years later, in 1137, the Archbishop of Rouen affiliated the community with the Cistercian order of Cîteaux, making Mortemer the first Cistercian abbey in Normandy.
