Morro Alto

Morro Alto

Santa Cruz das Flores, Portugal

About this place

Morro Alto is the highest mountain on Flores, an island in the western group of the Azores, Portugal. It rises to roughly 914 m above sea level in the municipality of Santa Cruz das Flores, and it is the natural goal for anyone who wants to see the island from its highest point.

What is Morro Alto?

The mountain belongs to a volcanic complex made of trachyte. Together with neighbouring Pico da Sé, it forms an imposing volcanic mass set between two deep erosion valleys. These were carved by the Badanela and Fazenda rivers. The result is a sharp, rugged relief typical of Flores, where steep slopes drop quickly toward the coast.

Where is it and what is the surrounding landscape like?

The summit lies in the elevated central part of the island. Peat bogs cover the surroundings, and the Azores juniper stands out among the vegetation. The climate is humid and Atlantic, so the top is often wrapped in fog, winds are strong and rainfall can be heavy. The area is protected as the Morro Alto and Pico da Sé forest reserve.

What is the hike to Morro Alto like?

The trail starts near the Negra and Comprida lagoons. At first it follows dirt tracks between pastures and peat bogs, then climbs gradually but steadily. The route is about 12 km round trip, with roughly 900 m of elevation gain, and usually takes 5.5 to 6 hours. Hiking sites rate it as hard, mainly because of mud and wind on the exposed stretches.

Along the way, wide views open up over deep valleys, vegetation-covered craters and the sharply cut line of the coast. A separate route links Morro Alto with Pico da Sé along the ridge. You can walk it or drive it.

When is the best time to go up?

Choose a day without low cloud, when the views are widest. Bring waterproof boots, a windproof layer and enough water. Because of the fog, check the forecast before setting out and avoid starting a long route late in the afternoon.
