About this place

Monty

Monty is an arts center in Antwerp's Het Zuid district, also known as Kultuurfaktorij Monty. It occupies a former cinema-theater hall on Montignystraat and has been one of the city's key stages for performing arts for decades.

Where does the street name come from?

Montignystraat takes its name from Count Florent de Montmorency, Baron of Montigny, a knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece and a representative of the Council of State under Philip II. The street was named in 1876. The entire neighborhood emerged on land freed up after the demolition of the Spanish fortifications and the former South Castle (Zuiderkasteel), which gave way to a new residential district in the second half of the 19th century. In 1897 the Sint-Michiel and Sint-Pieterkerk church was built there, becoming a focal point for the local community.

How did a parish hall turn into an arts center?

The building's history goes back to 1919, when the Werkmanskring Sint-Michiel, a workers' association, was founded and began meeting in a local hall known as 'De Grot', also on Montignystraat. In 1925, 'De Grot' underwent a major renovation, turning it into a drinking establishment and banquet hall. The actual theater and cinema building associated with Monty today was designed in 1958 by architect René Verbruggen, commissioned by NV Huize St. Michiel.

When did Monty become a theater stage?

The turning point came in 1984, when a group of volunteers with artistic ambitions took over the then-empty cinema hall. A year later, in 1985, the organization Monty vzw was formally established. Another key milestone was the 1987-1988 season, when the theater received official recognition from the Flemish government and began receiving subsidies — a status it still holds today as a Flemish government-subsidized institution.

What is Monty today?

Today Monty operates as an arts center focused on presenting, producing and developing performing arts — theater, dance and music. Its program includes small- and medium-scale productions from both local and international artists, making the venue a platform for artistic exchange that reaches well beyond Antwerp itself. The lineup is updated very frequently, so visitors planning a trip should check the current schedule shortly before arriving.

Where exactly is Monty located?

The center is located at Montignystraat 3-5, in a quiet part of the Het Zuid district — an area of Antwerp known for its post-19th-century urban redevelopment on former fortification land, now valued for its intimate, cultural character and proximity to other art institutions in the city.
