About this place
Montemuro (Serra de Montemuro) is a mountain range in northern Portugal, recognised as a protected area. It rises between the Douro valley to the north and the Paiva river to the south, and counts among the highest ranges in the country. The Portuguese geographer Amorim Girão called it "the most unknown mountain of Portugal", which sums up its character well: wild, lightly visited and far from the usual tourist trails.
Where is Montemuro?
The range spans several municipalities: Arouca, Cinfães, Resende, Castro Daire and Lamego. The centre of the area lies at roughly 40.98° N, 7.97° W. Nearby settlements include Alhões, Bustelo, Gralheira and Ramires. This is rural country, where mountain villages sit around broad, open uplands.
How high is Montemuro?
The summit, known as Talefe (also Talegre), reaches 1,381 m above sea level. The range averages about 838 m. It ranks as the eighth highest mountain range in Portugal. The peak has a prominence of around 836 m, the second highest on the Portuguese mainland, and it is the highest point in Viseu district and in Cinfães municipality. Slopes fall steeply toward the Paiva valley on the south side, while the broad crest to the north is gentler.
What to see and where to look
One of the best vantage points is Portas do Montemuro. From here you can read the shape of the range and look down into the deep Paiva valley. In clear weather other mountains of central Portugal appear on the horizon, including Serra da Estrela, Caramulo and the Gralheira massif.
The village of Gralheira stands at around 1,130 m in Cinfães municipality. It is among the highest settlements in the country and is known for its cold climate.
Who is Montemuro for?
It suits people who want quiet and walking across open ridges with almost no crowds. Routes start from areas such as Alhões and Cinfães. The region also has rich biodiversity, so binoculars are worth packing.
Frequently asked questions
What is the highest point of Montemuro? Talefe (Talegre), at 1,381 m.
Which rivers frame the range? The Douro to the north and the Paiva to the south.
Is Montemuro popular with tourists? No. It has been called the least known mountain of Portugal, so it stays peaceful.
Where are the best views? From the Portas do Montemuro viewpoint, which overlooks the Paiva valley and distant ranges.
When should I go? The altitude means it can be cold, so bring warm layers on the higher ground even in summer. Views are best on a clear day when the air is transparent, and an early start helps.
How do I get there? By car is easiest, through Cinfães, Castro Daire or Arouca, since public transport to these mountain villages is limited. Plan a full day for scenic drives and short walks.
