Monte Palace Museum

Funchal, Portugal

About this place

Monte Palace Museum in Funchal is a museum set within the Monte Palace Tropical Garden, in the Monte district above the capital of Madeira. It brings together a mineral collection, African sculpture and a historic estate with gardens in one visit.

How did this place come about?

The estate's story goes back to the 18th century, when Charles Murray, an English consul, bought the land and turned it into an estate. In 1897 it was acquired by Alfredo Guilherme Rodrigues, who built a palatial residence there. The building was later converted into a hotel called the Monte Palace Hotel. In 1988 the Madeiran entrepreneur José Berardo donated the property to his foundation, and the tropical garden opened to the public in 1991.

What can I see in the museum?

The museum has two permanent exhibitions spread across three galleries.

"African Passion" is a collection of contemporary Zimbabwean sculpture dating from the late 1960s onward. The stone figures show how sculptors from that country turn local traditions into modern form.

"Secrets of Mother Nature" occupies the lower floor. It presents a mineral collection regarded as one of the finest private ones in the world. The collection holds more than a thousand specimens, of which around 700 are on display. For anyone who enjoys geology, this is the highlight of the visit.

What about the garden?

The museum is part of the Monte Palace Tropical Garden, which covers roughly 70,000 square metres. Plants from around the world grow alongside Madeira's native flora. The centuries-old cycads, often called living fossils, stand out in particular. The garden belongs to the José Berardo Foundation, and the museum is visited as part of the same trip.

How should I plan a visit?

Monte sits on a hillside above Funchal, so getting there means heading uphill. Most visitors arrive by taxi, bus or the cable car from the city centre. Allow a few hours for an unhurried walk through the garden and both exhibitions. Paths run over slopes and steps, so comfortable shoes help. Check the garden's official website for current opening hours and ticket prices.
