Monte Mozinho

Penafiel, Portugal

About this place

Monte Mozinho is a hill in the municipality of Penafiel, Porto district, northern Portugal, rising to about 414 m above sea level. Its slopes hold one of the region's most interesting archaeological sites: the Castro de Monte Mozinho, also known as the "Dead City of Penafiel" (Cidade Morta de Penafiel). The site lies at roughly 41.150 N, 8.318 W, in the parish of Galegos.

What is the Castro de Monte Mozinho?

A castro is a fortified settlement from the period when local traditions and Roman influence blended in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. The settlement on Monte Mozinho was founded in the 1st century AD and remained inhabited until the 5th century. It is regarded as one of the largest castros on the peninsula, which is why it draws researchers and travellers curious about ancient history.

The name "Dead City" reflects what remains today: stone foundations and street layouts that you can walk among in an open, green landscape.

History of the excavations

Digs took place in two major phases, 1943-1954 and 1974-1979, with further archaeological campaigns in later years. They uncovered part of the built-up area and produced many finds that help reconstruct daily life in the settlement. Among the studied discoveries is a hoard of coins from the late Roman Empire.

What to see

  • The ruins – outlines of buildings and streets spread across the hillside.
  • The Interpretation Centre – opened in 2004, with models and artefacts that complement a walk around the site. It is a good place to begin your visit.
  • Penafiel Municipal Museum – the castro is one of its branches. The museum houses objects found during the excavations, including a group of statues of warriors and a horse.

The castro also belongs to the Network of Castros of the Northwest Peninsula, so you can combine it with other sites in the region.

The hill in numbers

Monte Mozinho stands 414 m high with a prominence of about 44 m. According to Portuguese topographic rankings, it is the 14th most prominent elevation in the Penafiel municipality. It is a modest summit, but enough for the settlement to overlook its surroundings.
