Monte Crep

Monte Crep is a panoramic summit in the Treviso Prealps, rising above the town of Miane in the province of Treviso, on the border between the Venetian plain and the Valbelluna valley.

Where is Monte Crep located?

Standing at roughly 1,346 metres above sea level, Monte Crep — known locally simply as "Mont" — sits on the ridge connecting it to the nearby Monte Cesen. This ridgeline separates the Venetian lowlands from the Piave valley and forms a natural boundary between the Treviso Prealps and Valbelluna. The mountain overlooks the Prosecco vineyards around Valdobbiadene, one of Italy's best-known wine regions.

How do you get to the top?

The most direct approach follows trail number 989, starting in Miane at the car park next to the Sanctuary of Madonna del Carmine, at about 470 metres elevation. The path climbs through dense Prealpine forest toward Malga Mont, a mountain pasture hut sitting at 1,310 metres in a scenic basin between the meadows of Monte Crep and the woods of Monte Prenduol. The climb is technically easy and needs no mountaineering experience, though the elevation gain of nearly 900 metres makes it a full-day outing for hikers with average fitness.

Descent can follow the same path, or hikers can complete a loop that finishes with about 4 km on a paved road back to the starting point. Longer variants link Monte Crep with the Grotta del Landroi cave, Monte Prenduol, or Monte Corno, depending on time and stamina.

What will you see from the summit?

The top is a grassy ridge with a cross and benches, opening onto a full 360-degree panorama. To the south, the view stretches across the Venetian plain toward the sea; to the west and north rise the Presanella and Lagorai ranges; and to the east and northeast you can pick out the mountains of Belluno and Friuli along the Piave valley. On the opposite side of the ridge, Col Visentin and Col de Moi — two landmark hills of Valbelluna — come into view.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring and autumn offer the mildest temperatures in the forest sections and the clearest views from the top. In summer, the lower wooded stretches can get warm, though the open pastures around Malga Mont usually catch a cooling breeze. In autumn, the surrounding Prosecco hills add a layer of colour to the hike, making it appealing even to visitors who aren't dedicated trekkers.
