Monestir del Miracle

Monestir del Miracle is a small Benedictine monastery that forms part of the Santuari del Miracle, a Marian sanctuary in the western part of the municipality of Riner, in the Solsonès region of Catalonia. How do you get there?

What is the story behind the sanctuary?

According to tradition, the site's origins go back to 1458, when two shepherd boys, Celdoni and Jaumet, reported a vision of the Virgin Mary. Both boys came from the nearby farmhouse of La Cirosa, which still stands just over five hundred metres north of today's church, and their account gave rise to the Marian devotion that has continued at the site ever since. The church visitors see today dates from the 17th century, built considerably later than the original apparition.

The Benedictine monastery attached to the sanctuary has a much more recent history. Its foundation stone was laid on 16 July 1899, in the presence of the apostolic administrator and abbot of Montserrat, Josep Deàs, and the first community of monks settled there on 1 September 1901. The monastery has remained linked to Montserrat ever since, with monks from the abbey maintaining the community. On 22 April 2008, the entire sanctuary complex was declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest, formal recognition of its historical and artistic importance within Catalonia.
