About this place
Mjøssamlingene in Langset (Minnesund)
Mjøssamlingene is the maritime museum of Lake Mjøsa, Norway's largest lake. It sits on the waterfront near Langset and Minnesund in Eidsvoll municipality, right beside the Minnesund bridge. The collection was founded in 1981 and tells how the lake linked nearby villages, farms and towns for generations.
What kind of place is it?
This is not a single building full of display cases but a cluster of historic buildings on the shore. Together they form an open-air harbour museum: old warehouses, a captain's house, a workshop and small huts tied to life on the water. Since 2006 it has belonged to Mjøsmuseet, a regional institution created by merging several museums around Mjøsa, including those in Gjøvik and Toten.
Why does Skibladner matter here?
The best-known star of the site is the paddle steamer Skibladner, regarded as one of the oldest paddle steamers still sailing on a lake. Regional sources say it was launched in 1856 from the slip, the shipyard ramp, on the museum grounds. The slip was used and rebuilt over the years, and a former building by the quay served as the ship's winter shelter.
Which buildings can you see?
- The main warehouse (pakkhus) from 1801, now housing exhibitions on boat and ship traffic on Mjøsa.
- The captain's house from 1844, linked to skipper Ole Amundsen, Skibladner's first captain. It now serves as an information centre.
- The Skibladnerbrua warehouse from 1846, where the steamer spent the winter.
- The workshop and the log-driver's cabin (Fløyterbrakka) from 1952, recalling timber floating on the lake.
- The fisherman's cottage, which by tradition was built during the Second World War as a laundry for German soldiers.
Who is it for?
It suits anyone interested in the history of technology and shipping, steamboat fans, and families looking for a calm, short stop by the lake. A visit is more of a stroll from building to building than a classic museum tour, so it is best planned for good weather. Much of the interest is outdoors, and the view of Mjøsa and the bridge adds atmosphere.
