Middenloop Zwalm

Strijpen, Belgium

About this place

Middenloop Zwalm is an extensive nature area stretching along the middle course of the Zwalm river in East Flanders, Belgium, spanning the municipalities of Zottegem, Zwalm and Brakel. Covering more than one hundred and forty hectares of meadows, valley slopes, groves and woodland, it forms one of the most valued landscapes of the Flemish Ardennes (Vlaamse Ardennen).

What makes up Middenloop Zwalm?

Rather than a single continuous reserve, the area is a mosaic of smaller pockets of nature scattered along both sides of the river valley. These sub-areas include Boterhoek, Bruggenhoek, Bruul, Jan de Lichte, Jansveld, Moriaan, Rozenhoek, Vossenhol and the woods around Steenberg. Each patch has its own character, ranging from damp riverside grasslands to steep, wooded slopes, so walking through the wider complex reveals a variety of habitats typical of this gently rolling region.

Management and conservation of the land is carried out by the local branch of the Belgian nature organisation Natuurpunt, operating here as Natuurpunt Zwalmvallei. Their work maintains grazing land, hedgerows and older tree stands, supporting the biodiversity of the valley.

Exploring the area

A network of marked walking paths crosses the reserve and is open to visitors year-round. One well-known route is the Mijnwerkerspad, which follows an old railway track along the Zwalm river and the slopes of its valley, linking the municipalities of Brakel, Zottegem and Zwalm. Another option is the Berendries loop, a roughly 12.6-kilometre circuit that passes the most notable spots within the Middenloop Zwalm area.

Walkers can take a break at the Boembekemolen mill, where a terrace offers a place to sit and order a drink. It is a convenient stop roughly halfway through a longer walk, particularly on warmer days. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash, since parts of the land are used for grazing and controlling pets helps protect the local flora and fauna.

Who is this destination for?

Middenloop Zwalm suits visitors looking for a quiet outdoor escape away from busier towns and cities. The combination of rolling terrain, mixed woodland and open meadows, together with the presence of the river, makes it appealing both to those planning a longer, multi-hour hike and to families wanting a shorter, relaxed walk. The Flemish Ardennes are known for their gently undulating countryside, and the Zwalm valley is one of the region's defining landscapes.
