About this place
Mesocco Castle (Castello di Mesocco) is one of the largest castle ruins in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. The fortress occupies a rocky spur above the Misox valley, just south of the village of Mesocco, and is a Swiss heritage site of national significance.
Where is Mesocco Castle?
The ruins lie in the municipality of Mesocco, in southern Graubünden, in the Val Mesolcina (German: Misox). The castle sits on a hilltop roughly 800 m above sea level and looks down over the valley floor. Its coordinates are approximately 46.3805 N, 9.2332 E. The stronghold watched over the route running up the valley toward the pass, which explains the choice of site.
How did the castle begin?
The origins go back to the early Middle Ages. Around the 7th century a small fortified church dedicated to St Carpophorus (S. Carpoforo) was built on the hilltop as a refuge for the surrounding villages. A tower was added between 1150 and 1200, and the castle itself is first mentioned in 1219. Over time the site grew into a sprawling defensive complex.
Who owned it?
For about four centuries, from the 12th century until 1480, the castle was the seat of the von Sax family, lords of Misox. In 1480 the mercenary captain Gian Giacomo Trivulzio took over the lordship of the valley together with the castle. He strengthened the walls and turned the castle into a formidable fortress equipped with effective artillery. The Trivulzio family held Misox until 1549, when the valley's inhabitants bought back their rights and won their freedom.
In that same year, 1480, Mesocco and neighbouring Soazza joined the Grey League (Grauer Bund) of their own accord, one of the alliances that later formed Graubünden.
What can you see today?
The castle is a permanent ruin, yet its scale is striking: extensive walls and building remains rank among the largest in the entire canton. Among the ruins you can find traces of the oldest settlement around the church of St Carpophorus, along with fortifications expanded under the Trivulzio. From the spur there are views over the valley and the surrounding slopes.
