Massabari Waterfall

Cùllieri/Cuglieri, Italy

About this place

Massabari Waterfall (S'Istrampu 'e Massabari) in Cuglieri is one of the most distinctive natural attractions in the province of Oristano, Sardinia. Hidden in the valley of the Riu S'Abba Lughida river in the heart of the Montiferru region — an area shaped by ancient volcanic activity — it draws visitors with its clear water, a natural pool at the base of the falls, and surroundings of untouched Sardinian countryside.

Where is the waterfall?

S'Istrampu 'e Massabari lies about 3 km from the centre of Cuglieri, in the Valle di Riu S'Abba Lughida. The trail begins on the outskirts of the town near the Fontana di Tiu Memmere — a historic spring known for its exceptionally clean water. The whole area sits within the Montiferru region, whose volcanic origins are evident in the characteristic basalt rock formations and the dense Mediterranean vegetation that lines the path.

What does the waterfall look like, and what can you do here?

The river drops over a rocky ledge into a natural pool at the base — a small, calm basin surrounded by wild vegetation where swimming is possible in summer. This is one of the few easily accessible waterfalls in Sardinia where visitors can stand right at the water's edge and cool off during hot summer days. The waterfall flows year-round, though water volume decreases during the hottest months of summer; spring and early autumn bring the most powerful flow.

How difficult is the trail?

The full return excursion to S'Istrampu 'e Massabari covers approximately 7.5 km with 460 metres of elevation gain, takes around 3.5 hours at a moderate pace, and is rated medium difficulty. The path passes through typical Sardinian macchia — dense Mediterranean scrubland and laurel woodland. Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended, particularly on the descent to the waterfall where wet, mossy stones can be slippery.
