Mass grave: Fosa de Priaranza del Bierzo

The Priaranza del Bierzo mass grave is a memorial site in the municipality of Priaranza del Bierzo, in the El Bierzo region of the province of León, Castile and León. In October 2000, an exhumation here launched Spain's modern movement to recover the memory of victims of the Civil War and Francoism.

What happened here?

On 16 October 1936, in the opening months of the Spanish Civil War, thirteen civilians with republican sympathies from towns across the Bierzo area were killed and buried together in an unmarked pit. Among them was Emilio Silva Faba. For more than six decades the burial site remained unmarked, known only to a handful of local residents.

The push to uncover the truth came from a grandson of one of the victims, journalist Emilio Silva, who while interviewing residents of Bierzo was told by a local anti-Francoist that he knew where his grandfather's grave was. The family asked the municipal authorities for support, and on 21 October 2000 excavation work began. After three days of digging, the first remains surfaced — a boot was found, and beneath it the bones of a foot. The remains of all thirteen victims were eventually recovered; they are known today as "the Thirteen of Priaranza."
