About this place
Máslovická stráň is a protected nature reserve in Central Bohemia, in the Prague-East district, sitting on the right bank of the Vltava River between the villages of Máslovice and Vodochody. The protected area covers a forested southern slope above the valley of the Máslovický stream and stretches roughly two kilometers, from a rocky cliff above the river to the edge of Vodochody.
Why is this area protected?
The reserve was established in 1999 to protect a series of rocky outcrops and fragments of rocky steppe that support rare and endangered plant and animal species. The protected territory covers 27.25 hectares. Its mosaic of habitats combines dry meadows, forest steppe, rocky steppe, and patches of woodland, making it a valuable refuge for species adapted to dry, sun-exposed conditions typical of the middle Vltava valley.
What is there to see?
The landscape is defined by exposed rock ledges and cliffs dropping toward the river, contrasting with the gentler, wooded sections of the slope. This combination of rock, meadow, and forest packed into a relatively small area explains why the site earned formal nature-protection status rather than remaining just a scenic overlook.
The Máslovická educational trail
A nature trail runs through the reserve, opened in autumn 2003. It is 1.2 kilometers long and has 13 stops. What sets it apart is the design of its information points: they were created as sculptures during an art symposium held in Máslovice in 2003, giving each stop an individual, artistic form instead of a standard signboard.
The trail leads from the bank of the Vltava toward the local museum. Near its start, one stop is dedicated to Julius Grégr, a Czech politician and journalist who built a villa in the area, along with information about a beekeeping research institute that once operated in the region.
Who is it for?
Máslovická stráň suits visitors looking for a quiet nature walk close to Prague, away from the crowds found at the region's better-known sights. The trail's gentle profile makes it accessible for families with children, while its steppe flora and exposed rock geology above the Vltava will interest nature and geology enthusiasts alike.
