Manor house of los Cuetos

Casona de los Cuetos is a 16th-century manor house standing at the foot of Peña Cabarga mountain in the village of Sobremazas, in the municipality of Medio Cudeyo, Cantabria. Built on one of the two hills (cuetos) that give the surrounding area its name, it has long been one of the region's most recognizable historic buildings.

Where did this building come from?

The house was built in the 16th century by Gonzalo Gutiérrez de los Cuetos, whose family retained ownership of the estate for many generations. In the 18th century the building underwent a major renovation that gave it its current architectural form — it was during this period that the chapel dedicated to Saint Augustine was added, now an integral part of the structure.

For centuries the property passed down through successive heirs, and as often happened with Cantabrian country houses, ownership eventually became divided among different branches of the family. It wasn't until 2001 that one heir, Agustín Lomba Larreta-Azelain, reunited ownership of the entire estate and carried out a comprehensive restoration in collaboration with the Cantabrian regional government's Department of Culture.

The facade draws the eye with two stone arches leading into a covered portico — a classic feature of Cantabrian noble architecture that served as a formal entrance and gathering space. The adjoining chapel of San Agustín is topped with a small bell tower carrying a bell and a weathervane, visible from a distance above the village rooftops.

The building combines the austere stone walls typical of Cantabria's fortified manor houses with the more refined details added during the 18th-century renovation. Because of its historical and architectural value, it was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Asset of Cultural Interest) in 1985 — Spain's highest level of heritage protection.

Sobremazas lies in the municipality of Medio Cudeyo, a short drive from Santander, right at the foot of the Peña Cabarga massif, a popular destination for hiking and a well-known viewpoint over Santander Bay. The easiest way to reach it is by car via the local roads connecting Santander with the Cudeyo valley; the area is also well suited to a longer walk combining the village with a climb up the nearby hill.

As Casona de los Cuetos remains privately owned, the interior is generally not open to visitors — but it's well worth stopping to admire the facade, the portico, and the chapel from outside. Spring and early summer are the best times to visit, when the surrounding hills are green and the views from Peña Cabarga are at their most striking, though autumn colors also pair nicely with the building's stone architecture.
