Mali Urljaj

Mali Urljaj is a hill in the Urljaj massif, rising above the village of Bruvno in the Lika region, within the Gračac municipality. It forms part of a group of summits neighboring Mount Kremen and the Lička Plješivica range, right in the heart of Croatia's Dinaric mountains.

Where is Mali Urljaj located?

The Urljaj massif is bordered by the Mazin field to the north and the Bruvno field to the east and south. Within the massif sit four peaks close together, ranging between 1,200 and 1,295 meters above sea level — Mali Urljaj is one of them. Its neighbor, Mount Kremen, part of the Lička Plješivica massif, is separated from Urljaj by the Bruvno–Mazin–Donji Lapac road (D-506), which runs over the Mazin pass.

Bruvno itself sits along the D1 state road (Zagreb–Split), between Udbina (21 km away) and Gračac (14 km away), at an elevation of roughly 750 meters. It's a tiny settlement — just 46 residents as of 2021 — home to a Serbian Orthodox church dedicated to St. John the Baptist, reflecting the local community's roots.

This makes the ascent possible from virtually any direction, and orientation on the ground is rarely a problem — even without a clearly marked path, the way forward and the neighboring peaks stay in view. From the upper reaches, the panorama opens onto the Mazin and Bruvno fields flanking the massif on two sides, as well as the Kremen massif across the Mazin pass. It's a landscape typical of Lika: wide, open limestone basins ringed by gentle but sharply defined mountain ridges.

When is the best time to visit?

Because the lower slopes are bare of trees, spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons to visit, when temperatures are moderate — in summer, the grassy slopes can get heavily exposed to the sun and quite dry. Worth keeping in mind: in March 2022, a serious wildfire broke out near Bruvno and burned around 300 hectares of land, a reminder that fire risk in this part of Lika is real during hot, dry months, so extra caution is advised in summer.
