Mairulegorreta

Mairulegorreta is a karst cave in the municipality of Zigoitia, set on the slopes of the Gorbea massif in the province of Álava, in the Basque Country.

Mairulegorreta is one of the best-known caves in Álava, both for its scale and for the role it plays in local culture. The system stretches nearly 13 kilometers of galleries, lined with striking karst formations — stalactites, stalagmites and other structures shaped over thousands of years.

The cave also holds an important paleontological record. Remains found inside include the cave bear (Ursus spelaeus) and its ancestor Ursus deningeri, along with bones from aurochs, steppe bison, cave lynx, wolves and deer — traces of animals that inhabited the area long before humans arrived.

The main chamber acts as a natural amphitheater. Since 1963 it has hosted Euskal Jaia, a Basque culture festival first organized by the Manuel Iradier Hiking Society. The event has continued ever since and remains one of the highlights of Zigoitia's yearly calendar.

How to get there?

The usual starting point is the village of Murua, often described as the gateway to the Gorbea massif. From there, a marked hiking trail leads over a few kilometers to the cave's entrance. The route forms part of the wider network of paths crossing Gorbea Natural Park, popular with hikers from across the region.

What to know before visiting?

Exploring the inside of the cave is a different matter from simply reaching its entrance — the full speleological route is circular and takes around three hours to complete. Adding the approach, the return, and the guide's explanations, the whole outing can take up to five hours. Given the demanding terrain and the dark, damp galleries, going inside is best done with a local guide or as part of an organized caving group.

When to visit?

Spring and autumn are the best seasons to explore the area around Mairulegorreta, when temperatures in the Gorbea mountains are mild and trails aren't softened by winter rainfall. In summer, late July is worth planning around, when the Euskal Jaia festival fills the cave with music and traditional Basque customs. In winter, access can be more difficult due to weather conditions in the higher parts of the massif.
