Machado de Castro National Museum in Coimbra
The Machado de Castro National Museum (Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro) is an art museum in Coimbra, central Portugal. It is named after Joaquim Machado de Castro, one of the country's best-known sculptors. Opened in 1913, it is one of those rare places where several eras of a city sit on the same spot: a Roman forum, a medieval bishop's palace and contemporary architecture.
Why is the building as interesting as the art?
A visit links three connected parts: the Roman cryptoporticus, the historic Episcopal Palace and a modern building added during renovation. In the early centuries of the Christian era, this was the site of the forum of Aeminium, the Roman name for Coimbra. The underground galleries of the cryptoporticus date to the 1st century and were built to support that forum. In the Middle Ages they served as the foundation of the palace of the bishops of Coimbra.
From bishop's palace to museum
The building dates to the 12th century and was the Episcopal Palace of the Coimbra diocese until 1910. After Portugal became a republic, it was given a new purpose as a museum, which opened in 1913.
What is in the collection?
The collection covers Portuguese and foreign sculpture from the 11th to the 18th century and is divided into four parts that differ in material and style. Many pieces come from churches and convents in Coimbra and the surrounding region. When the last religious orders were closed, around 1834, part of their possessions was moved to the Instituto de Coimbra and kept there until the museum opened. This gives the collection a strong local pedigree and shows what religious art in the region looked like.
The modern extension
The latest renovation ran from 2004 to 2012 and included a new building. The project won the Piranesi/Prix de Rome Prize in 2014. The result sets historic walls beside contemporary architecture, and the Roman underground, the palace and the new wing form a single visiting route.
