Lukov Castle

When was the castle first built?

The earliest reliable written record of Lukov dates to 1332, during the reign of John of Bohemia. Historians generally believe the castle itself is older, most likely raised in the first half of the 13th century on the initiative of a Bohemian king, possibly to guard a trade route running through the surrounding hills.

How did the castle fare through centuries of conflict?

During the Bohemian-Hungarian War (1477-1488), troops under Matthias Corvinus captured and burned Lukov. Once the fighting ended, the castle was rebuilt and considerably expanded: the Nekš of Landek family turned it into a Renaissance-style residence, adding new wings and improving its living standard.

A second blow came during the Thirty Years' War. By then owned by the Minkvic of Minkvicburk family, the castle was seized and damaged by Swedish troops. The Swedes never settled there, and Lukov's importance as a noble seat faded in the following decades — the castle was eventually abandoned late in the 18th century, falling into disrepair thereafter.
