About this place
Městská hora lookout tower stands on the hill of the same name just west of Beroun's historic center, in the Beroun-Město district. It's a modest but locally popular observation tower, reachable in a short walk from the town square.
Where did the tower come from?
The tower was built in 1936 as a superstructure added on top of the town's municipal water tank, which explains its plain, reinforced-concrete form — the entire structure, including the staircase, is made of concrete. It stands 14 meters tall, with 66 steps leading to the viewing platform, which sits at a height of 11 meters. The hill itself reaches an elevation of 290 meters above sea level.
For decades the tower served Beroun's residents, but in the 1980s it was closed to the public because of its poor technical condition. Following a thorough reconstruction, it reopened to visitors in 1999 and has remained accessible ever since.
What can you see from the top?
The viewing platform offers a panorama of Beroun itself and the surrounding hills. On clear days you can make out the peak of Děd, the hills of the Křivoklátsko region, the limestone landscape of Český kras (the Bohemian Karst), and the Brdy hills to the south. It's one of the few spots in town that offers such a wide view over this part of central Bohemia.
How do you get there?
Městská hora sits inside a municipal park, so the approach leads through pleasant tree-lined paths. The walk is short and doesn't require any special preparation, making it manageable for families with children. The tower's coordinates are 49.9626, 14.0651, which makes it easy to navigate to from the city center.
What else is nearby?
At the foot of the hill, within the same park, sits a small bear enclosure — home to bears once associated with a well-known Czech children's television show. A scout center also operates nearby. A walk through the park can easily combine a visit to the tower with a stop at both of these spots, making the outing appealing for view-seekers and families alike.
The tower may not be the most striking lookout in the country, but its story — from municipal water tank to years of neglect to a successful restoration — makes it a worthwhile stop while exploring Beroun. It's also a convenient way to get a proper viewpoint in just a few minutes, without planning a full day trip into the mountains.
