About this place
Lagunas de Neila is a cluster of eight glacial lakes tucked into the Sierra de la Demanda, in the southeastern corner of Burgos province, within the municipality of Neila. The whole area is protected as the Neila Glacial Lagoons Natural Park, covering close to 6,860 hectares between the Urbión massif and the broader Sierra de la Demanda range.
How did the lakes form?
The landscape visitors see today was carved by glaciers that retreated at the end of the last glaciation, roughly 10,000 years ago. The ice masses gouged out rocky basins, and the debris they pushed ahead of them settled as frontal moraines, which now act as natural dams holding back the water. The result is a classic glacial cirque, with the individual lagoons arranged around its rim.
How many lakes are there, and what are they called?
The park contains eight bodies of water: Laguna Negra, Laguna de la Cascada, Laguna Larga, Laguna de Las Pardillas, Laguna de los Patos, Laguna Brava, Laguna Oruga, and Laguna Muñalba. The cirque surrounding Laguna Negra and Laguna Larga is generally considered the most striking, with sheer rock walls dropping straight into the water. Peaks around the park reach roughly 2,000 metres, while the lagoons themselves sit at altitudes of up to about 1,873 metres above sea level.
What wildlife lives here?
Extensive pine forests cover the slopes of the valley and support a rich variety of fauna. Visitors may come across signs of Iberian wolf, red deer, roe deer, wild boar, wildcat, and badger. Overhead, golden eagles, northern goshawks, and eagle-owls patrol the skies. The lakes and surrounding streams are home to trout, otters, and the elusive Pyrenean desman, a small semi-aquatic mammal whose presence is a strong indicator of clean water.
What can you do and see there?
A network of hiking and cycling trails links the different lagoons, allowing visitors to circle individual cirques or climb to nearby summits. Routes vary in length and difficulty, making the park suitable for both casual family walks and more demanding mountain hikes. The main visitor point is the Casa del Parque, housed in the Church of San Miguel in the village of Neila itself.
