Laguna del Comisario

Laguna del Comisario is a seasonal inland lagoon lying just west of Puerto Real, in the province of Cádiz, within the Bahía de Cádiz. It forms part of the protected Complejo Endorreico de Puerto Real (Endorheic Complex of Puerto Real) and has held the status of Integral Zoological Reserve since 1987, under a law passed by the Andalusian regional parliament.

The lagoon covers just under 41 hectares and sits on albariza, the pale, lime-rich soil typical of this part of Andalusia, which holds rainwater well. It is a very shallow, flat-bottomed wetland fed mainly by surface runoff. During periods of peak flooding, excess water drains out through the Arroyo del Yesero stream, which acts as a natural overflow.
