Lac de Villeneuve-de-la-Raho

Lac de Villeneuve-de-la-Raho is a man-made lake roughly 10 km north of Perpignan, in the Pyrénées-Orientales department of French Catalonia. Its waters spread across the communes of Villeneuve-de-la-Raho, Bages, Montescot and Pollestres, taking their name from the first. The site combines the practical role of a water reserve with that of a popular recreation area and a refuge for waterbirds.

How did the lake come to exist?

A natural pond called Étang de Barrià, covering around 150 hectares, once occupied this spot. Considered of little use, it was drained in 1854. The idea of a reservoir only returned in the 20th century: retention works were built here in the 1970s, and the basin was flooded again in 1977. The project was designed to secure water for irrigating nearby farmland, to support fire-fighting reserves, and to help supply drinking water to the Roussillon plain.

How large is the area around the lake?

The complex is made up of three separate basins with a combined water surface of about 230 hectares, surrounded by close to 50 hectares of maintained green space, including planted pine woods. That scale makes Lac de la Raho one of the larger artificial lakes in the region and a significant feature of the local water landscape.

Is it a bird reserve?

Yes. Wildlife settled on the site remarkably quickly after it was flooded, which led authorities to place part of the area under protection. In 1983 the Groupe Ornithologique du Roussillon (GOR) began regular bird monitoring, and in 1985 a 14-hectare section was formally designated an ecological reserve. The area is listed as a ZNIEFF (zone of special ecological interest) and a ZICO (Important Bird Area). The lake serves as a stopover point for migratory birds, and around 200 bird species have been recorded in and around the reserve.

What can visitors do there?

Lac de la Raho is a favourite outing for residents of Perpignan and the surrounding area. In summer, from June to August, a supervised beach with a lifeguard post is open for swimming. Paths around the basins are laid out for running and walking, along with a fitness trail with outdoor exercise stations. Cyclists and mountain bikers can ride the full loop around the lakes, a 6.7 km circuit. On the water, visitors can row, sail or paddle a canoe or kayak, and anglers will find spots for fishing. Pétanque is another popular pastime here. Access to the site is free of charge and there are no fixed opening hours, making it an easy stop for a day trip.
