Kovářův mlýn

Košťálov, Czechia

About this place

Kovářův mlýn is a small, little-known nature monument on the western edge of the village of Košťálov in the Semily district of the Liberec Region in the Czech Republic. The name refers to a former mill that once stood here on the banks of the Oleška stream, though the mill building itself no longer exists — today the site is known primarily for its abandoned slate quarry.

What can be found at this site?

The core of the protected area is an old slate quarry situated at an elevation of around 350 meters, on the left bank of the Oleška stream. The quarry itself is roughly 20 meters wide, and the exposed rock outcrops do not exceed five meters in height. Beyond the quarry, the protected area also includes surrounding forest land, which in fact makes up most of the site's total surface.

Why is this site protected?

Kovářův mlýn owes its status as a nature monument to its geological significance. It is a stratigraphic fossil site dating from the Lower Permian period — a rarity in the Podkrkonoší region, where comparable sites are found almost exclusively as fossilized wood near the town of Nová Paka. The rock layers exposed in the quarry have yielded remains of several species of amphibians as well as fish and fish-like vertebrates that lived here hundreds of millions of years ago. For paleontologists, it offers a valuable window into life during the Permian period, when this part of Europe looked drastically different from today.

How is the site managed and accessed?

The nature monument is administered by the Liberec Region, with a 50-meter protective buffer zone surrounding the core protected area. The site is not fenced and remains freely accessible to visitors. However, there is no tourist infrastructure or marked educational trail here to draw larger crowds, which is one reason Kovářův mlýn remains relatively obscure and is rarely visited by tourists despite its scientific value.

The area also faces the kinds of pressures typical of small geological sites: the spread of invasive plant species, unauthorized collection of geological material by amateur collectors, and waste dumped from nearby garages that border the protected land.

Frequently asked questions

Is there anything to actually visit at Kovářův mlýn? There's no mill building or conventional tourist attraction here — the main feature is the former slate quarry, which preserves fossil traces from millions of years ago. It's freely accessible, but without any visitor infrastructure.

Why is the site called "Kovářův mlýn" if there's no mill? The name comes from a mill that once stood at this location along the Oleška stream. The building itself is gone, but the name has stuck and today refers to the entire protected natural area.

Who would find this place interesting? Mainly people with an interest in geology and paleontology — it's one of the few sites in the Podkrkonoší region documenting Lower Permian life. For the average traveler, it's more of an interesting side note near Košťálov than a standalone destination.

Is admission free? Yes, the site is neither fenced off nor ticketed — access is open, as with most nature monuments in the Czech Republic.
