About this place
Bozkov Dolomite Caves (Czech: Bozkovské dolomitové jeskyně) form the only show cave system in the Czech Republic carved into dolomite rock, located in the village of Bozkov near Semily, in the foothills of the Krkonoše Mountains within the Český ráj (Bohemian Paradise) tourist region. Their lowest passages hold the largest underground lake in the country, making them one of the most distinctive karst sites in Bohemia.
How were the caves discovered?
The caves were found by accident in 1947, when blasting work in a small dolomite quarry broke through into hidden underground spaces. Local enthusiasts Josef Kurfiřt, Richard Havel and Josef Dolenský took a keen interest and spent years gradually exploring the newly revealed passages. The breakthrough came on 21 September 1957, when the group reached the entrance to the Cave of Surprise (Jeskyně Překvapení), where dripstone formations were discovered for the first time. The caves opened to the public in 1968, and in 1999 they were declared a national natural monument in recognition of their unique geological value.
What makes these caves unusual?
Today the mapped system runs for more than 1,000 metres, making it the largest known cave system in northeastern Bohemia. What sets Bozkov's caves apart from other Czech show caves is the rock they formed in: calcareous dolomite, a type found nowhere else among the country's publicly accessible caves. In the lowest sections, water has filled the passages to form underground lakes, one of which is considered the largest underground lake in the Czech Republic. The Cave of Surprise also holds the system's stalactite and stalagmite formations.
What is the visit like?
The public tour route covers 350 metres and takes around 45 minutes to complete. The temperature inside stays at roughly 7–8°C year-round, so warm clothing is recommended regardless of the season. The walk is not physically demanding, and even young children can manage it without difficulty, making the caves a popular family destination. Bozkov Dolomite Caves rank among the most visited attractions in the Český ráj region.
