Church of the Holy Spirit

Church of the Holy Spirit

Ostrawa, Czechia

About this place

The Church of the Holy Spirit stands in Zábřeh, a residential neighborhood forming part of the Ostrava-Jih administrative district in the Czech city of Ostrava. It is one of the city's younger churches — the plot was earmarked for a place of worship as far back as 1968, yet the building itself was not completed until decades later, in a very different political and architectural climate.

How was the church built?

The design was chosen through an architectural competition won by architect Marek Štěpán. Construction cost roughly 55 million Czech korunas and covered not just the church itself but also a pastoral center, a bell tower, and supporting facilities including garages and parking for visitors. Because the ground in this part of Ostrava is unstable — a common legacy of the region's mining history in Silesia — both the church and its tower rest on 36 concrete piles driven to a depth of about 18 meters. The church and its grounds were consecrated on 25 May 2004 by František Lobkowicz, Bishop of Ostrava-Opava.

What will you see there?

The building has an unusual elliptical floor plan, rarely seen in sacred architecture. The interior is arranged so that visitors move through a sequence of buffer zones that gradually dampen noise, light, and cold before reaching the main nave — a deliberate design choice that shields the space from the surrounding city. It's a detail worth noting for anyone interested in contemporary sacred architecture in Central Europe. In May 2024, new organs were consecrated inside the church in a ceremony led by Bishop Martin David, evidence that the parish continues to invest in the building's furnishings.

How do you get there?

The church sits in Zábřeh, a densely built residential district south of central Ostrava, well connected to the rest of the city by tram and bus lines running toward Ostrava-Jih. Its approximate coordinates are 49.7894 N, 18.2255 E, which makes GPS navigation straightforward whether you're arriving by car or on foot from the nearest public transport stop.

When should you visit?

The church functions as an active parish, so the best times to visit are during regular services or during the annual "Night of Churches" (Noc kostelů), an event when religious buildings across the Czech Republic open their doors to visitors outside normal mass hours. That evening offers a good opportunity to take in the architecture and interior without disrupting worship.
