Where exactly is Kopačko Lake?

Kopački Rit Nature Park covers roughly 23,126 hectares (231 km²) between the Danube to the east and the Drava to the south, in the far northeast of Croatia near the Serbian border. It is the country's oldest nature park, established in 1976. Only two permanent bodies of water lie within its boundaries: Kopačko Lake and the smaller Sakadaš Lake. More than 2,300 species have been recorded within the park, and over 140 bird species nest here, including white-tailed eagles, purple herons and cormorants. A boat ride through the channels and backwaters around the lake is the highlight of any visit. Trips typically last 45–60 minutes and depart from the dock near Sakadaš Lake, running from spring through late autumn. How do you get to Kopačko Lake?

Most visitors start from Osijek, about 20 km away, from where a road leads to the park entrance at Kopačevo — the village that gives the whole area its name. From the visitor centre, the boat dock is reached either on foot or by shuttle, depending on the season and water levels. Booking a boat trip ahead of time is worthwhile, especially in summer and on weekends when day-trippers from Osijek and the surrounding region fill up the schedule.

Close to the lake stands Tikveš Castle, a former hunting lodge complex that was converted in 2022 into a presentation and education centre covering the park's history and ecology. When is the best time to visit?

Spring and early summer offer the best conditions, with high water levels and birds actively nesting. Autumn brings the great waterfowl migrations. Water levels tend to drop in summer, which makes it easier to spot fish and shoreline plants but can occasionally limit boat access to some of the narrower channels.
