About this place
Kočičí skála (Cat Rock) is a small limestone outcrop rising to 361 metres above sea level, about 2 km north of Mikulov, right next to the road connecting the town with Klentnice. Geologically, it is an isolated rocky relict made of Ernstbrunn limestone, standing alone amid the surrounding farmland. In the past, a small quarry operated on the rock's southwestern side, extracting limestone on a modest scale.
Why is the rock protected?
Kočičí skála has held natural monument status since 1946, making it one of the longest-protected natural features in the region. Since 1976 it has also formed part of the Pálava Protected Landscape Area, and since 2004 it has been included in the European Natura 2000 network. The site is managed by the Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic (AOPK ČR).
What grows on the rock?
The rock's two slopes look strikingly different because of their opposite exposure. The western slope is covered with meadow steppe vegetation dominated by feather grass, while the eastern slope supports thermophilic shrubs adapted to warmer, drier conditions. The northwestern slope is the most notable botanically: it holds the only known population of narrow-leaved forget-me-not anywhere in the Pavlovské vrchy (Pálava Hills). Altogether, several hundred species of vascular plants have been recorded within this small protected area, over a dozen of which enjoy special legal protection.
Can visitors reach it on their own?
Yes, Kočičí skála is freely accessible year-round. A red-marked hiking trail, a cycling route, and the Naučná stezka Mikulov educational nature trail all pass close by, so a visit can easily be combined with a longer walk or bike ride through the countryside around Mikulov.
