Kněžice Castle

The first written record of Kněžice dates to 1222. Around the mid-14th century, the Hrutovice family built a fortified manor house together with a farming courtyard on the site — this stronghold became the seed from which the present castle grew. Until the end of the 16th century, half of the village and the surrounding hamlets, Víska among them, belonged to the monastery in Želiv, while the other half was held by various noble families, most notably the Waldstein (Valdštejn) line.

The Waldsteins held Kněžice until the Battle of White Mountain in 1620. After that, the estate passed to the Collalto family, who owned it continuously until 1945 and left a clear architectural mark on the building: a first side tower was added at the start of the 18th century, and a second followed toward the century's end, giving the castle its baroque profile.

What happened to it in the 20th century?

After 1945, the property was transferred to a local agricultural cooperative and fell into gradual disrepair over the following decades. That decline was only reversed in 2000, when the municipality of Kněžice bought the castle and launched a full reconstruction. The work was completed in October 2003.
