Klenov

Klenov is a forested ridge in the Vsetín Mountains (Vsetínské vrchy), rising above the Bystřička reservoir within the municipality of Bystřička in eastern Moravia. Its highest point, Zámčisko (678 m above sea level), holds the ruins of a medieval castle and a run of sandstone rock formations that today draw both hikers and climbers.

How to get there?

Most routes start at the Bystřička reservoir dam, from where a blue-marked trail leads toward the Klenov massif. By car, the easiest approach is via the village of Bystřička near Vsetín, where parking is available close to the dam. From there it is a straightforward forest walk up to Zámčisko, with no technical difficulty.

The heart of the area is the Klenov Nature Reserve, established in 1999 over 15.35 hectares. It protects natural beech forest mixed with fir and maple growing along the rocky ridge, together with fauna typical of mountain beech woodlands. Sandstone rock formations up to 19 metres high run along the crest — used by climbers as training walls and among the most distinctive landscape features of the Vsetín Mountains.

At the summit of Zámčisko lie the remains of the medieval Klenov castle, making the site an archaeological point of interest as well. Given how modest the surviving structures are, it's best approached as a scenic nature walk rather than a classic ruin-hopping visit.

A 7-kilometre nature trail (naučná stezka Klenov) with ten information panels runs through the massif, covering the geology, plants and wildlife of the region. It starts at the Bystřička reservoir, follows the blue trail past the nature reserve, climbs to the rocky peak of Zámčisko, and finishes at a forest pond.

When to visit?

In summer the route suits both hikers and mountain bikers — the dense forest canopy provides shade even on hot days. In winter, with enough snow cover, the area around Klenov is used by cross-country skiers. Spring and early autumn are the best times to observe the forest floor and the wildlife associated with the beech woods, when the reserve is at its most active ecologically.
