Klečoviště na Smrku

Lázně Libverda, Czechia

About this place

Klečoviště na Smrku is a small but ecologically remarkable nature reserve on the western slope of Mount Smrk in the Jizera Mountains, within the municipality of Lázně Libverda, Liberec Region, close to the Czech-Polish border. It protects one of only two places in the entire Jizera Mountains where dwarf mountain pine (kleč) grows naturally on rocky, mineral scree rather than on the peat bogs where it is usually found.

Where exactly is it located?

The protected area lies just below the summit of Smrk, on its western side, right next to some of the best-known hiking routes in the Jizera Mountains. Its approximate coordinates are 50.8882°N, 15.2665°E. The nearest place of tourist interest is Lázně Libverda, a spa town on the northern side of the Jizera Mountains, roughly a kilometer from Hejnice, known for its mineral springs and a centuries-old spa tradition.

What makes this reserve special?

Dwarf pine growing on bare rocky ground instead of typical peatland is a rare phenomenon across the wider Sudetes range. Alongside the stunted pines, the reserve's undergrowth is made up of bilberry and cranberry, together forming a stark, tundra-like landscape unusual for the relatively modest elevations of the Jizera Mountains. The rocky scree from which the dwarfed trees emerge formed through the weathering of local bedrock — it is precisely this combination of mineral substrate and microclimate that allowed dwarf pine to establish itself in such an atypical setting.

The site also has notable entomological value. It is home to rare beetle species, including Trechus amplicollis and several species from the genera Stenus and Coryphium — insects tied to the cool, damp microclimate of the stony slopes and the decaying organic matter found among the dwarf pines.

Can you actually reach it?

This is a place best appreciated from a distance rather than visited directly. Although the reserve lies only about 100 meters from the popular Tower Trail (Věžní stezka) and its branch toward the blue-marked route to Nové Město pod Smrkem, no marked path leads into the reserve itself. The terrain is densely overgrown with spruce and bilberry, which makes access genuinely difficult — and at the same time helps shield this fragile ecosystem from excessive foot traffic. The best way to experience the area is to walk the surrounding trails around Smrk, from which the twisted silhouettes of the dwarf pines on the rocky slope can often be spotted from a distance.

What to combine with a visit

The area around Smrk and Lázně Libverda is one of the more interesting corners of the Jizera Mountains, bringing together a long spa tradition, dense spruce forests, and unique natural habitats. Hiking the trails toward the Smrk summit lets visitors combine physical activity with the chance to observe rare flora, while a stay in Lázně Libverda itself offers an opportunity to rest and enjoy traditional spa treatments.
