Cathedral of the Annunciation

Gospić, Croatia

About this place

The Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Gospić is the main church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gospić-Senj in Croatia. It stands in the centre of Gospić, the town in the Lika region, and is one of the area's most important religious landmarks. The building joins eighteenth-century architecture with a turbulent twentieth-century story.

From parish church to cathedral

The church did not begin as a cathedral. For most of its history it served as a parish church, and the present building was raised between 1781 and 1783. Croatian sources describe it as a typical church of the Military Frontier, the border territory where settlers served in frontier regiments. The style is called Baroque-Classicist: the structure is restrained and proportionate rather than richly decorated.

It became a cathedral on 25 May 2000. On that day Pope John Paul II established the Diocese of Gospić-Senj, and the church in Gospić became its principal seat. The dedication to the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was kept.

Destruction and rebuilding

The hardest chapter in the cathedral's history came during the war in Croatia. On 15 September 1991 the church was hit and burned: the roof and the top of the tower were destroyed, and the interior was damaged by fire. Reconstruction ran from 1992 to 1999. One Polish source says the roof was in place before Christmas 1992. The work was completed on the feast of St Mary Magdalene in 1999, less than a year before the diocese was created.

This history makes the cathedral more than a monument for local people. It is a symbol of the town's recovery after the war, and anniversaries of the destruction are regularly remembered in local media.

What to know before you visit

The cathedral is right in the town centre, so it is easy to combine with a walk around Gospić. The coordinates are roughly 44.5456° N, 15.3758° E. Gospić is a convenient base for exploring Lika, and the church can be seen on the way to other attractions in the region. It is a working church, so keep quiet during services and dress modestly.

Who it is for

We recommend the cathedral to lovers of sacred architecture, anyone interested in the recent history of the Balkans, and travellers stopping in Gospić on the way through Lika. It is not an all-day sight, but it is a worthwhile stop that shows how the town coped with wartime loss and how the role of its main church has changed.
