Kasteel Edelhof

About this place

Kasteel Edelhof is a small, white-plastered manor house in Munsterbilzen, a village in the Belgian municipality of Bilzen, province of Limburg. The building stands on a plot that once held a rectory dating from 1725, which was eventually replaced by the current residence.

When was the manor built?

The present building was constructed in 1850 at the initiative of the then mayor of Munsterbilzen, De Matthys. Interestingly, much of the construction reused old 18th-century building materials, most likely salvaged from demolished structures belonging to the nearby Abbey of Munsterbilzen. As a result, although the manor itself dates only from the mid-19th century, it retains architectural details considerably older than the building's actual age.

What architectural style does it show?

The window surrounds were executed in Louis XV style, while the doors preserve rococo woodwork. This blend of elements from different periods makes Edelhof a notable example of a 19th-century residence built with reclaimed materials from older religious and secular structures.

Who lived in the house?

After its construction, the manor was inhabited successively by the noble and bourgeois families De Wautier, Leroy, and Legrelle. Each of them left a mark on the building's history, though it is the original 1850 construction and its architectural details that remain the main reason the property is included in the heritage register.

What happened during the 20th century?

In the 1940s, Edelhof was converted into a hotel and restaurant. This operation closed in 1958, after which the building passed into municipal ownership. Over the following decades it housed the offices of local associations, including a local history society dedicated to documenting the past of Munsterbilzen and its surroundings.

What can visitors see today?

After ten years of restoration work, the Edelhof castle and its surrounding grounds (Kasteeldomein Edelhof) reopened to the public in 2025. The restored manor now serves as a tourist attraction, housing a bistro as well as spaces made available to local community organizations. The domain has become a meeting point for residents and a stop on the tourist map of the Bilzen-Hoeselt region, combining a dining function with a cultural and social role.
