About this place
Kaňon potoka Kolné is a protected natural monument in the Česká Lípa district, tucked into the forests north of the village of Stvolínky in the Liberec Region of northern Czechia. It is a narrow rocky gorge carved by the small Kolné stream through sandstone bedrock, protected for its unusual terrain and the cascading waterfalls that run through it.
What makes this canyon unusual?
The canyon was formed by the erosion of soft sandstone under the constant flow of the Kolné stream. Thousands of years of water action have cut a narrow, deep slit into the rock — in places reaching a depth of up to 12 meters while measuring only about two meters across. This sharp contrast between depth and width gives the site an almost corridor-like feel, a formation typical of the sandstone canyons found across northern Bohemia.
The waterfalls of Kolné
The site's main natural feature is the cascading waterfall system created by the Kolné stream. The water drops in six distinct steps, with a combined height of 18 meters. This makes the Kolné cascades among the most impressive of their kind in the Českolipsko region. Each step in the waterfall has been shaped by differential erosion of sandstone layers of varying hardness — harder rock bands resist erosion longer, forming the ledges over which the water falls.
Why is the site protected?
Kaňon potoka Kolné has held legal protection as a natural monument (přírodní památka) since 1991. Since 2003, the area has been managed by the Regional Office of the Liberec Region. The protected status reflects both the rarity of this type of geological formation and the need to preserve the delicate balance of the gorge's ecosystem, which is sensitive to erosion and human disturbance.
Can visitors enter the canyon?
Because of the narrow, steep nature of the gorge, there is no marked hiking trail leading into it. The canyon and its waterfall are effectively inaccessible to the public — the confined rocky structure makes safe entry difficult. In the lower section, however, a few steps cut into the rock allow visitors to approach the site without venturing deep into the gorge itself.
Where exactly is it located?
The canyon lies north of the village of Stvolínky, in the Česká Lípa district of the Liberec Region. Its geographic coordinates are approximately 50.649°N, 14.425°E. The surrounding area belongs to the Českolipsko region, known for its numerous rock formations, sandstone gorges, and forested hills that draw nature and geology enthusiasts.
