Kamen Brela

Općina Brela, Croatia

About this place

Kamen Brela (Brela Rock) is a small rocky islet just off Punta Rata beach in Brela, Croatia, on the Makarska Riviera. It is the unofficial emblem of the town and one of the most photographed spots in Dalmatia.

What is Kamen Brela?

It is a lone boulder rising from the sea a short distance from the shore. According to the local tourist board, it is made of breccia, a rock formed from cemented fragments. It is often called the smallest island in the Adriatic, though it is closer to a rocky crag than a true island. The rock also appears on the municipal coat of arms, which shows how deeply it is tied to Brela's identity.

Why visit?

The vegetation is the big surprise. Seven Aleppo pines of different ages grow on this tiny surface, along with around a dozen other plant species. The silhouette of a few bent trees against turquoise water and the Biokovo mountains has ended up on countless postcards and promotional images of Croatia.

Punta Rata beach itself has a strong reputation too. In 2004 Forbes ranked it sixth among the world's most beautiful beaches.

When and how to see it

  • The best photos come in the morning and before sunset, when the light is soft and the beach is calmer.
  • Punta Rata is a pebble beach, so water shoes are handy.
  • Schools of colorful fish swim near the rock, and visitors recommend the spot for snorkeling.

Protecting the rock

Local media have reported that time and the roots of the trees are slowly weakening the rock. Treat it gently and avoid climbing on it.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an entrance fee? The rock is visible from a public beach, so there is no charge for the view.

Around the rock

Brela sits at the foot of the Biokovo massif, so combining beach time with a light hike is easy. A pine-shaded promenade runs around Punta Rata and leads toward neighboring coves. From higher points on the Biokovo slopes you can see the whole coastline, and Kamen Brela looks like a tiny dot on the blue surface from there. Plan at least half a day for a visit: a walk, a swim, photos and some rest in the shade of the trees.

Practical tips

Bring water, sunscreen and a hat, because the sun on the beach can be strong in midsummer. A camera or phone with a good lens will help capture the contrast of rock, pines and sea. If you enjoy photography, try shots from different parts of the beach, since the silhouette of the rock changes with the angle.
