JUDr. Jan Podlpný

Hněvčeves, Czechia

About this place

JUDr. Jan Podlipný is the name attached to a memorial plaque in Hněvčeves, a small village in the Hradec Králové district of the Czech Republic, honoring the lawyer and politician who was born there and later served as mayor of Prague. The plaque hangs on house no. 11, the building where the future mayor was born on 23 August 1848.

How to get there?

Hněvčeves lies in the Hradec Králové district in the northeast of the Czech Republic, part of the Nechanicko microregion. It's a small village best reached by car from nearby Hradec Králové. While in the village, it's worth also seeking out another local monument — one dedicated to an Austrian soldier shot on 2 July 1866 during the Austro-Prussian War, standing in front of house no. 15.

Who was Jan Podlipný?

Jan Podlipný was born in Hněvčeves to Josef Podlipný, a smallholder who also worked as a butcher and ran a local inn. He attended grammar school in Hradec Králové before transferring to the Academic Gymnasium in Prague, where he graduated in 1868. He then studied law at Charles University in Prague, earning his doctorate in April 1874.

In 1880 he opened his own law practice in Prague and soon became involved in the city's public life. He served on the Prague city council, became deputy mayor in 1893, and led the city as mayor from 1897 to 1900. From 1889 he also sat in the Bohemian Diet as a deputy for the Young Czech Party.

Podlipný's public activity extended beyond city politics. He compiled a collection of laws relating to the constitutional law of the Kingdom of Bohemia, published in 1882, and served as secretary of the Law Association (Právnická jednota). One of the most defining chapters of his career was his role in the Sokol movement: when the individual Sokol units were unified into the Czech Sokol Community in 1889, he became its first chairman, a post he held until 1906. He died in Prague on 19 March 1914.

Why is there a plaque in Hněvčeves?

The plaque, featuring a relief portrait of Podlipný, was mounted on his birth house in Hněvčeves in 1923, nine years after his death, as the village's tribute to its most notable native son. A year later, in 1924, a second memorial plaque was unveiled by the Czechoslovak Sokol Community at his former residence in Prague's Old Town — a sign of how closely he remained associated with the Sokol movement even decades after leaving his post.
