Trolltunga

Ullensvang, Norway

About this place

Trolltunga, "the Troll's Tongue", is one of Norway's best-known rock formations. A thin ledge of rock juts out horizontally over a drop on the edge of the Hardangervidda plateau, about 1,100 m above sea level and roughly 700 m above Lake Ringedalsvatnet. From a distance it looks like a stuck-out tongue, hence the name. It lies in Ullensvang municipality in the Hardanger region.

Where is Trolltunga?

The formation is in western Norway, about 17 km from the town of Odda. Most visitors stay in Odda or nearby Tyssedal and travel from there to the trailhead. The surroundings are high-mountain terrain with lakes, deep valleys and a broad plateau.

How do you hike to Trolltunga?

The classic trail starts at Skjeggedal. The round trip is usually given as 27-28 km, and the elevation gain is quoted anywhere from about 800 m to over 1,100 m depending on the source. Most hikers need 10-12 hours including breaks; fit walkers finish in about 9-10 hours.

Since 2017 a toll road has led up to Mågelitopp, which shortens the outing to about 20 km. Parking there is limited, with guides mentioning around 30 cars per day.

When should you go?

Independent hiking is recommended in the summer season, roughly from early June to the end of August. Outside it, winter conditions can apply and a guide is required. Exact dates depend on the year and snow cover, so check current rules with local tourism organisations before you travel.

What should you bring?

  • sturdy hiking boots and clothing for any weather,
  • water and food for the whole day,
  • a headlamp and a charged phone with an offline map,
  • protective layers against wind and rain.

Frequently asked questions

Is Trolltunga hard to reach? It is a long, demanding route but not a technical one. The difficulty comes mainly from distance and elevation gain.

How much time do you need? Plan a full day, typically 10-12 hours with breaks.

Where should you stay? Odda or Tyssedal are the most convenient bases.

Can the route be shortened? Yes, by using the toll road to Mågelitopp, which brings the hike to about 20 km round trip.

What is the view like? From the ledge you see Lake Ringedalsvatnet about 700 m below and the slopes of the surrounding plateau.

Trolltunga suits anyone who enjoys long mountain days and views worth the effort. With good preparation and a checked forecast, the hike stays with you, and the photo on the rock ledge has become a symbol of Norway's fjords and mountains.
