Jelenc

Jelenc is a rocky mountain peak in Gorski Kotar, in the Gerovo municipality, in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, Croatia. It rises to roughly 1,441–1,442 m above sea level and closes off, from the northwest, a long ridge that starts at Snježnik — one of the highest peaks in the region at 1,505 m. The same ridge also carries Guslica (1,490 m), Međuvrhi (1,462 m) and Planina (1,426 m), which makes Jelenc a natural target for hikers who want to walk the whole ridgeline rather than tick off a single summit.

How do you get to Jelenc?

The most convenient starting point is Gerovo itself. From there a trail runs via the hamlet of Lazac up to the ridge near Snježnik, usually taking 1–1.5 hours. From that point the route continues along the crest, past Guslica and Planina, all the way to Jelenc's stony summit. This approach suits hikers planning a full-day ridge walk rather than a short stroll.

A second popular approach starts from Čavle, on the western side of the range. The loop linking Platak, Snježnik, Guslica and Jelenc runs to roughly 20 km there and takes close to 7 hours on average — a route generally rated as challenging, mainly because of the rocky ground and the amount of ascent involved. Whichever direction you choose, sturdy hiking boots are worth having, since the final stretch below the summit crosses loose rock and small crags.
