Jardim Público de Évora

Évora, Portugal

About this place

Jardim Público de Évora – a romantic garden in the heart of the city

Jardim Público de Évora is a historic public park in the southern part of Évora, in Portugal's Alentejo region. It covers roughly 3.3 hectares and makes a pleasant break after exploring the UNESCO-listed old town.

How did the garden come about?

It was laid out between 1863 and 1867 on the former royal vegetable garden of the Palace of Dom Manuel and the Convent of São Francisco. The Italian architect José Cinatti designed it in the spirit of 19th-century Romanticism: winding paths, shaded corners, large trees and exotic plant species.

What can you see in the park?

  • Palace of Dom Manuel – the grounds include the walls of a 15th-century palace housing the Galeria das Damas, a blend of Gothic, Manueline, neo-Moorish and Renaissance elements.
  • Decorative "ruins" – the romantic design includes ruínas fingidas, artificial ruins assembled from pieces of various monuments, among them Manueline-Mudejar style windows.
  • Ermida de São Brás – from the town walls you can spot this crenellated chapel from around 1480, with its pointed, Arabian-Gothic profile.
  • Animals – peacocks roam freely, while swans and ducks swim in the water.

What facilities are there?

You will find benches, picnic tables, a kiosk, fountains and a children's playground, which makes it a good choice for a family outing.
