About this place
Jardim Municipal de Oeiras is a public municipal garden in the heart of the town of Oeiras, Portugal, a few kilometres west of Lisbon. It sits right next to the town hall (Câmara Municipal), between the built-up centre and the Jardins do Marquês de Pombal, at Rua do Caminho da Quinta 1, 2780 Oeiras. Coordinates: 38.690096, -9.314356.
How did the garden in Oeiras come about?
The park opened in 1940 on the land of two former country estates. The first was Quinta do Couto, also called Quinta do Proença, dating back to 1640. The second was Quinta do Mocho, also known as Quinta da Arriaga, from 1722. Today's layout is therefore the result of merging two estates with separate histories into a single space for local residents. Local sources also tie the site to the area where the town itself grew up, near the mouth of the Ribeira da Laje stream.
What is there to see in Jardim Municipal de Oeiras?
A small stream, the Ribeira da Laje, runs through the garden. Two bridges connect the two halves of the park, and each half has a slightly different feel. You will find:
- wide lawns for sitting and resting,
- tree-lined paths that give shade on hot days,
- playgrounds for children,
- small, romantic bridges over the stream,
- a fountain documented in the Oeiras municipal archive.
The split into two halves gives a walk a natural route: you cross from one former quinta to the other by way of the stream.
Who is this place for?
The garden suits a short stroll in the town centre, families with children thanks to the playgrounds, and anyone looking for a green spot to relax. Because it lies next to the town hall, it is easy to combine with a walk around central Oeiras and the neighbouring Jardins do Marquês de Pombal, which are linked to the marquis's palace.
