Jardim do Rossio

Aveiro, Portugal

About this place

Jardim do Rossio is a public park in the heart of Aveiro, Portugal (coordinates 40.6417 N, 8.6567 W), close to the city's canals. It is one of Aveiro's oldest public spaces: a shared open ground has stood on this spot for at least five hundred years, and its story is closely tied to the story of the city itself.

What is Jardim do Rossio?

The Rossio is a park-square, a green urban space where locals stroll, rest in the shade of the trees and meet in the city centre. In Portuguese, a "rossio" is an open public square, and that is how the place worked for centuries. It grew out of necessity: this was where activities that kept Aveiro's residents fed and employed took place, and it served as a link between the town and the overseas world.

What is the history of the place?

In the 16th century, after King Manuel I granted the city a new charter, Aveiro's first pelourinho, or pillory, was erected here as a symbol of civic rights. In 1809, during the Peninsular War, English troops were quartered on the grounds as part of the Anglo-Portuguese army that defeated Napoleon's forces in 1811.

For many years the square hosted the Feira de Março, the March Fair, and within its bounds there were also a velodrome, a bullring and an open-air cinema. In 1922 it staged the first home matches of Sport Clube Beira-Mar, before the club moved elsewhere.

What changed with the renovation?

The renovated Rossio was inaugurated in January 2024. The project cost about 20.5 million euros and included an underground car park. Tree cover rose by more than 20 percent compared with before. The works were preceded by about a dozen legal proceedings, after which construction could go ahead.

The Rossio also has an interpretive centre dedicated to archaeological finds and the history of the site, which runs guided visits.

Why visit?

  • Central location: the park sits in the middle of town, so it fits easily into a walk around Aveiro.
  • History in one place: a 16th-century pillory, a chapter of the Napoleonic wars, fairs and the beginnings of local football all meet on one square.
  • Fresh greenery: the new planting and tidy layout offer shade and a place to sit.
  • A stop on a route: the Rossio is one of the points on the Grande Rota da Ria de Aveiro, a route about the surrounding canals and lagoon.
