Jardim do Morro

Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal

About this place

Jardim do Morro in Vila Nova de Gaia

Jardim do Morro is a public garden on the hillside of Vila Nova de Gaia, on the southern bank of the Douro river. It is best known for its wide panorama of Porto, the Dom Luís I Bridge and the colourful rooftops across the water, and it is one of the most popular sunset spots in the area.

Where is Jardim do Morro?

The garden sits on Avenida da República, just south of the upper level of the Dom Luís I Bridge. Its neighbours are the Serra do Pilar Monastery and the upper station of the Gaia Cable Car. The coordinates are roughly 41.137 N, 8.609 W, so it is easy to find on any map.

How do I get there by metro?

The Jardim do Morro station on line D of the Porto Metro is right by the garden. Trains on this line cross the Douro on the bridge's upper deck, arriving from Porto. That means you can reach the garden without a car, and the ride over the bridge is a small attraction in itself.

What is the history of the garden?

The garden dates back to 1927 and has been refurbished recently. It was once part of the grounds of the Serra do Pilar Monastery, an Augustinian house built in 1670. The monastery hill played an important role in the Siege of Porto (1832–1834) during Portugal's Civil War, because its height gave control over both banks of the Douro. Today the monastery and its surroundings are part of the UNESCO-listed historic centre of Porto.

What can you see from the garden?

The view is the main draw. In front of you lie the Douro, the iron span of the Dom Luís I Bridge and Porto's buildings stepping down to the water. In the evening the skyline turns orange and gold. From here it is a short walk to the Serra do Pilar Monastery or the upper cable car station.

When is the best time to visit?

Evening, before sunset. On weekends the garden gets very crowded with tourists and locals. If you want a calmer visit and a good spot for photos, arrive early or come on a weekday.
