About this place

Igreja Paroquial de São Pedro de Penaferrim – parish church in Sintra

Igreja Paroquial de São Pedro de Penaferrim is the parish church of the village of Penaferrim in Sintra, Portugal, dedicated to Saint Peter. Set within the Sintra cultural landscape, it has long served as the spiritual heart of the local community. Its name is often confused with that of an older church inside the Moorish Castle, so both stories are worth knowing.

How did the São Pedro parish begin?

Tradition links the parish to the period after Sintra was definitively taken from the Moors in 1147. King Afonso Henriques is said to have founded it, and the original church of Saint Peter stood inside the Castelo dos Mouros under the name São Pedro de Canaferrim.

Over time the castle emptied and that building lost its importance. The parish seat moved to the church in Penaferrim, the medieval church within the castle was abandoned, and by the 18th century it lay in ruins. Its remains can still be seen in the castle complex, and Wikidata describes it as a former church in Castelo dos Mouros.

What is the history of the Penaferrim church itself?

The earliest known documentary mention of the church in Penaferrim dates to 1403, and its origins go back to the 14th century. In 1565 it was deeply remodelled at the expense of D. Álvaro de Castro. The coffered vault of the nave dates from this campaign and remains one of the most distinctive features of the interior.

What changed in the 18th century?

The interior received a Baroque makeover thanks to the patronage of D. Tomás de Almeida, the first Patriarch of Lisbon. Under his direction the upper walls were painted with illusionistic "false architecture" by António Pimenta Rolim. The azulejo tiles come from the workshop of Valentim de Almeida and are dated to around 1730.

Why visit?

  • It shows how layers of history stack up in Sintra: medieval roots, a Renaissance remodel and Baroque decoration.
  • It tells the story of a parish that moved from the castle hill down to the village.
  • The coffered ceiling, painted architecture and azulejos are a rewarding stop while exploring the area.
  • Penaferrim lies close to the main attractions of the Serra de Sintra, so a visit combines easily with a walk nearby.
