Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios (Reguengo do Fetal)
About this place
Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios is the parish church of Reguengo do Fetal, in the municipality of Batalha in central Portugal. It stands in the middle of the village and belongs to the Diocese of Leiria-Fátima, in the Deanery of Batalha. The building is listed as a cultural heritage monument, and its dedication honours Our Lady of Remedies (Nossa Senhora dos Remédios).
Where is the church and how do you find it?
Reguengo do Fetal is a small locality near Batalha, best known for its Gothic monastery on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The church sits at the centre of the village, so it is hard to miss. Its coordinates are roughly 39.6396 N, 8.7628 W. A visit combines easily with a trip to Batalha and the wider Leiria area.
What does the exterior look like?
The most distinctive feature is the facade, flanked by two bell towers. This symmetrical arrangement sets the church apart from many plainer village churches in the region. Heritage descriptions classify it as a Mannerist building with Baroque and Revivalist elements, reflecting later alterations and additions.
In front of the church is a terrace. Its layout, along with the southern entrance, dates from the repairs carried out after the 1969 earthquake.
What is inside?
The interior has a nave with a wooden ceiling. The chancel is raised and covered by a barrel vault, and the side chapels are barrel-vaulted as well.
The main altarpiece draws the eye. It is polychrome and Rococo in style, made up of two columns with Corinthian capitals topped by a curved pediment. At its centre is a tribune closed by a round arch, holding a painting of Our Lady of Remedies, the patron of the church.
What is the history of the church?
Sources give 1512 as the date of construction. The church was reconstructed in the 16th century, yet traces of the earlier architecture survive, including stone arch frames in the walls. This layering of styles, from Mannerism through Baroque and Rococo to later additions, is visible in both the structure and the interior.
The 1969 earthquake caused severe damage. Afterwards the front terrace and the southern entrance were reorganised, giving the surroundings of the church their present form.
