About this place
Igreja da Misericórdia in Portalegre is a 16th-century Renaissance church that now plays a very different role from the one it was built for: it houses the Regional Conservatory of Music. It is a rewarding stop for travellers who enjoy seeing how buildings find new purposes over the centuries.
What is Igreja da Misericórdia in Portalegre?
The building belonged to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia, a charitable brotherhood that supported the poor and those in need. It is a single-nave church which, together with the neighbouring Consistory (Consistório), forms a classic Portuguese Misericórdia complex: a church plus the rooms where the brotherhood's leaders met. Architecturally it belongs to Renaissance religious building.
How did Portugal's Misericórdias begin?
The network of charitable brotherhoods was launched by Queen Leonor, wife of King John II. Friar Miguel Contreras was entrusted with organising them, and he travelled across the country founding a Misericórdia in each place he visited. Portalegre joined the movement around 1500–1501.
Why does the church have no main façade?
At first the brotherhood operated from the medieval church of São João Baptista, which had previously been a parish seat. The later building went up on the site of that older church, so it has no conventional, showpiece front façade. For visitors this means the exterior is more modest than you might expect from a church of its era, and its character is best understood as part of the whole complex with the Consistory.
What happened to the building in the 20th century?
Its story has been eventful. In 1922 the entire contents of the church were sold at auction for 50,000 escudos, and the money went towards clothing for the hospital run by the Misericórdia. The building was then rented out. Among other uses, it served as an entertainment venue, including a cinema, and as the headquarters of the newspaper "A Plebe". It was classified as a Property of Public Interest (Imóvel de Interesse Público) in 1944.
What is it used for today?
In the 1980s the Municipal Council of Portalegre bought the church and the Consistory building. Since 1991 the Regional Conservatory of Portalegre has operated here, so the former church once again serves the local community, this time through music education.
How to plan a visit
The church stands in Portalegre, the capital of the district of the same name in Portugal's Alentejo region. Because a music school operates inside, access to the interior may depend on classes and the institution's schedule, so it is worth asking the local tourist office or the conservatory before you go. From outside, the site is best viewed together with the Consistory as part of a walk through the town's historic buildings.
