Iberian Wolf Center of Castilla y León

Puebla de Sanabria, Spain

About this place

The Iberian Wolf Center of Castilla y León (Spanish: Centro del Lobo Ibérico de Castilla y León "Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente") is an open-air educational complex dedicated to the Iberian wolf, inaugurated in October 2015 in the village of Robledo, roughly 10 kilometers from Puebla de Sanabria in the province of Zamora. The center sits within the Sierra de la Culebra, a Regional Hunting Reserve that is also designated a Site of Community Interest under the European Natura 2000 network. This mountainous region is considered one of the areas in Europe with the highest density of free-living wild wolves, which makes it a fitting setting for an interpretive center built around the species.

What can visitors see at the center?

At the heart of the complex are three-hectare enclosures where Iberian wolves live in semi-freedom, allowing visitors to observe their behavior in surroundings that closely resemble a natural habitat. Three elevated observation points are positioned around the enclosures, two of which have been designed to be accessible to visitors with reduced mobility. A network of walking trails guides visitors through the grounds, gradually introducing the biology, ecology, and behavior of the wolf, as well as its place in the region's ethnography and traditional shepherding culture.

What does the center's architecture look like?

The main building was designed as an eco-efficient structure integrated into the surrounding mountain landscape. Its form evokes the "cortello" or "curro dos lobos," a traditional 18th-century pastoral construction originally built to hunt wolves by driving them into enclosed pens. This architectural choice creates a symbolic bridge between the historically conflictive relationship between humans and wolves in the region and today's approach centered on conservation and environmental education.

How do you get to the center?

Access is from Puebla de Sanabria via the regional road ZA-921 toward Ungilde, continuing on toward the village of Robledo de Sanabria, where signage directs visitors to the center, located about 1,500 meters from the village. Because of the nature of the facility and the welfare of the animals housed there, visits are only possible as guided tours booked in advance — there is no option for unaccompanied, walk-in access to the grounds.
