Hůrecký vrch

Prášily, Czechia

About this place

Hůrecký vrch is a forested peak rising to 1,099 metres above sea level in the Šumava mountains, within the municipality of Prášily in the Klatovy district of the Czech Republic. It stands roughly 1.5 km southeast of the hamlet of Nová Hůrka and just under 5 km from the centre of Prášily, surrounded by the dense spruce forests typical of this part of Šumava.

How do you get to the summit?

There is no marked hiking trail leading to the top of Hůrecký vrch — it's one of those Šumava summits you have to find your own way to. The easiest approach starts in Nová Hůrka, following a blue-marked forest road to the former settlement of Stará Hůrka, from where unmarked paths lead the rest of the way to the top. The full route covers about 2.5 km with roughly 210 metres of elevation gain. No special equipment is required, but a map or GPS device is a good idea, since it's easy to lose your bearings in the dense forest.

What will you see up there?

The summit itself is marked by a geodetic survey point, but the views from the very top are modest — the thick spruce forest blocks most of the panorama. A better outlook opens up a few dozen metres east of the summit, where the tree cover thins and reveals a view over the surrounding Šumava hills. This is a spot better suited to quiet, solitary forest hikes than to those chasing a dramatic photo from a viewpoint.

What's the history behind this place?

The most interesting historical detail here concerns the former glassworks settlement of Hůrka, which once stood in the southwestern saddle of Hůrecký vrch. The first part of the settlement was founded back in 1732 by the Hafenbrändl family, who ran a glassmaking works on the site — a craft that shaped the landscape and settlement pattern across Šumava for centuries. Little remains of the old glassworks today beyond traces in the terrain, but the history helps explain why the surrounding forests hide so many forgotten roads and clearings.

When is the best time to visit?

Late spring through early autumn is the best window for a hike here, when the unmarked paths are dry and easier to follow. In winter, deep snow cover makes the trail-less ascent considerably harder and calls for real experience navigating mountain terrain without a marked route.
