Hrad u Strašína

Hrad u Strašína is an unfinished, long-vanished defensive stronghold in the Pošumaví region, perched on a rocky spur above the hamlet of Lazny, about 1 km south of the center of Strašín in the Klatovy district. It never grew into a functioning fortress, and today only faint traces in the ground mark where it once stood.

The ruins sit at an elevation of roughly 711 meters, on a rocky promontory rising above Lazny, part of the village of Strašín, in the Klatovy district of the Pilsen Region. Who built it, and when?

No written record documents the construction of the stronghold directly. Its existence is known only from archaeological finds — pottery fragments dated to the 13th century. Historians place its founding in the second half of that century, most likely on the initiative of the Vítkovci family, intended as a small defensive outpost guarding the surrounding estate. Construction was never completed, since ownership of the Strašín estate changed hands before the fortress could be finished.

What happened to the surrounding estate?

While the stronghold itself is absent from written sources, the history of Strašín village and its church is better recorded. In 1254, a Strakonice Order of St. John member named Nicholas was entrusted with care of the local church. Twenty years later, in 1274, Vítek of Krumlov recorded the sale of Strašín village along with two mills. The estate finally passed to the Strakonice Johannites in 1279, for 100 marks of silver — a change of ownership considered the likely reason the half-built fortress was abandoned.

What can visitors see on site today?

What remains is an unfinished fortification. A ditch with an outer rampart cuts off the promontory on its southern and southwestern sides, while the northern side has no defensive earthworks at all — itself evidence that work stopped partway through. No trace of any building survives within the former core of the stronghold; the only masonry left is a stretch of dry-laid stone wall, about 80 cm high, above the western edge of the ditch. A natural rock outcrop roughly 2 meters high stands nearby. Altogether, the site consists of modest earthworks that are easy to walk past without knowing what to look for.

How do you get there?

The site is freely accessible at no cost. The easiest approach starts at the hamlet of Lazny, following the road south toward Javorník. About 100 meters past the last houses, just before the road curves gently to the left, a forest path branches off and climbs toward the ridge above. At the saddle on top of the ridge, turn toward the northeast-facing spur where the ruins lie. The route is not marked as a first-tier tourist trail, so bringing a map or GPS device is worthwhile.
