Hostibejk

Kralupy nad Wełtawą, Czechia

About this place

Hostibejk is a compact but geologically remarkable hill rising directly above the town of Kralupy nad Vltavou, in the Central Bohemian Region, Mělník district. Its summit reaches 233 meters above sea level, and since 2002 it has been protected as a natural monument – not for its plants or wildlife, but for the outstanding geological value of the rock exposed at the top.

Why is Hostibejk protected?

The hill serves as a reference profile (stratotype) documenting two distinct geological periods stacked in a single outcrop. Its lower layers consist of Carboniferous arkoses belonging to the Nýřany layers of the Kladno Formation, topped by a younger layer of Cretaceous sandstone from the Peruc-Korycany Formation. In other words, the hill once lay at the bottom of a prehistoric sea, and fossils of ancient marine life are preserved within its rock. This geological "sandwich" makes Hostibejk a valued site for research and environmental education alike.

What to see at the top

The hill's most striking feature is an exposed sandstone cliff, visible from the surrounding area. At the summit stands a wooden lookout pavilion built in the 1920s, funded personally by architect Anton Karban. From its platform, visitors get a view over Kralupy nad Vltavou and the Vltava river valley. Next to the pavilion sits a concrete anti-aircraft bunker, a leftover from the region's military history, and nearby operates a restaurant named Hostibejk, popular with walkers finishing their climb.

The educational trail

Along the hill's southern slope runs the Hostibejk educational trail (naučná stezka), leading up to the lookout pavilion above the railway line. Information panels along the way explain both the geology of the site and the history of the hill itself, along with its significance to the people of Kralupy.

Who is Hostibejk for?

This is a spot for anyone looking for a short but rewarding walk with a view — reaching the summit requires no special preparation, making it an easy afternoon trip from Prague or nearby towns. Geology enthusiasts will appreciate the rare rock exposures, while families with children can enjoy the educational trail and the viewpoint. Its proximity to the center of Kralupy nad Vltavou makes it easy to combine a visit with exploring the town itself.
